LOS ANGELES – Boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao climbs up the ring Saturday, May 7 a prohibitive 4-1 favorite to win over Shane Mosley in their world welterweight championship bout, which is the main event of the Top Rank boxing card at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Las Vegas oddsmakers have the first-termer Filipino congressman at -600, while Mosley, the underdog, is pegged at +400. What this means is when you wager $600 on Pacquiao you will win only $100. Conversely, if you bet $100 on Mosley, you will win $400. On the Pacquiao winning by KO, the odds is at 5/8, meaning your $800 wager would only yield $500 in return; a Pacquiao victory by decision has it at 9/5. Oddsmakers’ figures on the Pacquiao-Mosley fight have been constantly changing as the fight draw near, with Pacquiao going up as high as a 7-1 favorite.
Pacquiao, who shrugged off the underdog tag when he fought the great Oscar DelaHoya, doesn’t rely much on the odds out there. He thinks it is just a measure of how people trust and respect the fighter. “I don’t believe in odds. Inside the ring, anything can happen,†he was once quoted as saying.
Sources from Pacquiao training camp said the coaching staff is not really looking for a KO. “We have prepared to fight for 12 rounds. If KO comes, so be it,†the same source said.
