The new Board will serve for two years and will lead and guide the association in its objectives of providing scholarships to deserving UP resident members and service programs for the needy specially victims of calamities and injustice. The ETAANA torch of leadership was passed on beginning with Aurelio “Lito” Quiray of New Jersey, Fernando “Ding” Viray of Philadelphia, Rogelio “Ojie” Laurente of Northern CA, Benjamin “Ben” Tuazon of Northern CA, Juan Pablo “JP” Paredes of Washington, Rufino “Ruffy” Ignacio of Washington, and Emmanuel “Bojjie” Martinez of California.
The idea of a reunion was hatched in New Jersey when more than twenty UP APO alumni got together while attending the 1st APO Alumni Council of North America Convention in 1992. Thus, the biennial gathering came into fruition starting with the first one in San Francisco, CA in 1993, followed by Las Vegas, NV in 1995, Bellevue, WA, in 1997, at the Diliman campus and Sulo Hotel in 1999, Atlantic City, NJ in 2001, the Orcas Islands, WA in 2003, Concord, CA in 2005, Anaheim, CA in 2007, Cornet Bay, WA in 2009, and again Las Vegas, NV in 2011. This year’s reunion is being hosted by Eta Southwest.
Alumni and their spouses and families from the US, Canada, the Philippines and other countries come together to relax, enjoy the camaraderie, “blast to the past of the college years” or to simply bask in the friendship, food and fellowship that is unique to A-Phi-O.
The UP APO was chartered in 1953 and has produced distinguished alumni in the fields of government service, academe, business, private sector, and its graduates are found in all parts of the globe making a difference in the lives of others and for themselves. The Honorable Vice President of the Philippines, Jejomar “Jojo” Binay, is today the most prominent leader and alumni of APO.
