The Gollayan sisters receive accolades from the Filipino community for winning WCOPA top awards

LOS ANGELES, CA – The Gollayan Sisters were awarded the 2013 Senior Grand Champion Vocal Group of the World award at the 17th Annual World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) competition held at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel from July 12-21, 2013. For this competition alone, they won 16 gold medals, 4 silver medals and 4 Overall Champion plaques.

They are a female pop group from Santiago City, Philippines comprised of sisters Almira, Irene, Mylene and Celina Gollayan Cercado. Formerly known as the Cercado Sisters, they were the 2012 Family Showtime Grand Champions in the TV program Showtime which airs on ABS-CBN in the Philippines. In 2006, they competed for the first time at WCOPA and won in the Junior Team category.

Filipino community leaders Engr. Eli and Mrs. Darna Umayam held a press conference and meet and greet for the Gollayan Sisters in Eagle Rock on August 16, 2013 where they received recognition and multiple plaques of appreciation from various Filipino agencies and organizations, including the Philippine Department of Tourism presented by Dr. Rey Landero on behalf of Annie Cuevas, Tourism Attaché, Philippine Press Photographers USA, Inc. and Philippine Independence Coordinating Council – Southern California.

The 2013 WCOPA Grand World Championship was dominated by Filipinos, with Beverly Caimen as the 2013 Grand Performer of the World and Aldeza Dela Torre as the 2013 Junior Grand Champion Performer of the World. Reynaldo Gorospe was the 2013 Senior Grand Champion Male Model of the World and Beverly Gorospe was also the 2013 Senior Grand Champion Vocalist of the World. The Philippines was also awarded 3rd Place for most entries attending WCOPA. Participants from more than 50 countries competed in the event which is often cited as the “Talent Olympics.”

Jed Madela, the first Filipino to win the WCOPA world grand champion became a world renowned performer after being immediately signed with Universal records. The Filipino community and the Filipino media wish the same path for the Gollayan sisters, as expressed by Mrs. Umayam, “May their talent, determination and charm bring them continued success and happiness. The Filipino community is very proud of them.”
