MANILA (Mabuhay) – Sen. Nancy Binay on Tuesday urged the Department of the Interior and Local Government to consult with the National Housing Authority about providing shelter to informal settlers.
In a statement, Binay twitted the DILG for getting a P1 billion fund for relocation and housing purposes. She earlier said Executive Order 90 states that it is the NHA that is mandated to implement the government’s housing program.
“The DILG already has a plateful of responsibilities, we can only hope that the DILG can effectively manage all of its functions without compromising the people’s welfare,” Binay said.
The NHA is currently headed by Vice-President Jejomar Binay, father of the lady senator. VP Binay and DILG Secretary Mar Roxas were rivals in the 2010 vice-presidential race and could face off again in the 2016 presidential election.
Finance committee chief Senator Francis Escudero earlier said the DILG is “empowered to undertake such housing projects for the Local Government Units (LGU) under Sec 29 of the [Urban Development and Housing Act].”
The lady senator, however, noted that the DILG is already at the helm of the relief, rehabilitation and restoration efforts in Central Visayas after the devastation wrought by super typhoon “Yolanda.”
She said the DILG is also working on relief and rehabilitation in other areas hit by natural calamities including the Zamboanga siege.
“From my standpoint, I believe that the DILG already has a gargantuan task. I just hope that DILG would be genuine to its undertaking and to constantly consult with NHA when it comes to the technical aspect and execution of housing programs,” Binay said. (MNS)
