Allsup sponsors Walk to Stop Lupus Now; will provide consumer information for individuals with disabilities
Belleville, Ill.—Sept. 25, 2013—Allsup, a nationwide provider of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) representation, will offer free SSDI eligibility screenings at Exposition Park, Saturday, Sept. 28, during the Lupus Foundation of America’s Walk to End Lupus Now, beginning at 9 a.m.
About 1.5 million people in the United States experience significant tissue damage, organ failure, disability and death due to lupus. Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that can affect people of any age, but is more common among minorities and women of childbearing age. Lupus causes the immune system to attack its own body cells, causing severe joint and muscle pain, extreme exhaustion, fevers and skin rashes.
Many individuals with lupus cannot continue working. According to the 2011 National Burden of Lupus Survey, 63 percent of people with lupus quit work or retired earlier than planned. People who cannot work due to a mental or physical condition like lupus may be eligible for SSDI benefits.
SSDI is a federally mandated disability insurance program employers and employees pay for through payroll (FICA) taxes. It provides monthly income based on an individual’s past earnings and contributions. Individuals must be under full retirement age and unable to work due to a severe mental or physical disability expected to last 12 months or more or is terminal. Individuals are eligible for Medicare 24 months after their initial date of SSDI eligibility.
SSDI is an important resource for former workers because it provides a monthly income and access to healthcare. However, the application process can be confusing and stressful. Allsup experts will be available Saturday to answer questions about SSDI and provide eligibility screenings.
