Fil-Am candidate Pulido appeals for your vote

By Dan E. Nino

Once again, we go to the polls this Tuesday, March 8 – Election Day, this time to elect our city council members. There are two Filipino American candidates in Los Angeles County running for public office. They are incumbent Carson City Mayor Pro-tempore Elito Santarina and ABC School Board Member Mark Pulido who is running for councilman in the City of Cerritos.

Of the two candidates, Mr. Santarina is a shoo-in to be re-elected by virtue of his incumbency with a well-entrenched campaign machine and the support of current Carson Mayor Jim Dear.

Mark Pulido, who has the most solid and impeccable credentials among the candidates in the Cerritos City Council race, is facing three formidable opponents because of their financial wealth. Be that as it may, political pundits claim that he has a good chance to win this time, but it will be a very close race and will be determined by Pulido’s supporters showing up at the polls in large numbers on Election Day.

There are three open slots available for the Cerritos City Council in this election to be held on March 8. This is a challenge to Filipino Americans to rally behind Mark Pulido to stand up and be counted. He deserves the chance to be our council member.

Mark Pulido was born and raised in the area and was educated in public schools in the ABC Unified School District. At Whitney High School, Mark founded the Filipino Club – Club Kaibigan in 1984, and graduated with honors in 1987. He attended UCLA for college, where he served as President of UCLA Samahang Pilipino, helped to establish Tagalog courses at UCLA and went on to be the first UCLA Student Body President of Filipino ancestry in the university’s history. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree of History and Asian American Studies. Thereafter, he obtained his Master’s degree in Public at the University of Chicago as a Woodrow Wilson National Fellow.

Pulido came back to his hometown, married his high school sweetheart Gloria Perlas and they started raising their family. In 2001, he was elected member of the ABC Unified School Board. His run was unopposed – the second and third times he was overwhelmingly re-elected receiving the top-vote both times. In 2007-2008, he served as the President of the ABC Board of Education. His record of service speaks well of his achievements by raising the standard of education of his constituents, balancing the budget without any layoffs and keeping the schools among the best in the nation.

Additionally, his extensive experience working for the federal government (U.S. Department of Justice in 1996), state legislature (Assembly and Senate), the City of Long Beach and the ABC School Board had prepared him to serve as a councilman for the City of Cerritos.

Mark is the proud son of Ester Lagmay Pulido (past Chair of the Cerritos Fine Arts and Historical Commission) and the late Rodolfo “Rudy” Angeles Pulido (former Post Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Cerritos-Artesia Post 1846). In their own right, Ester and Rudy Pulido helped lead the effort to establish the Cerritos Veterans Memorial, which was dedicated on Veterans Day in 2006.

Mark is also the proud grandson of World War II veterans – the late Jose Pulido (retired U.S. Navy) of Naic, Cavite, Philippines and the late Alfredo Lagmay (Philippine Scouts and retired U.S. Army) of Santa Maria, Ilocos Sur, Philippines. Pulido views his public service career as continuing a proud family tradition of serving his community and country as his parents and grandparents did before him.
