Damage from Visayas quake jumps to P133.6-M

MANILA, Sept 5 (Mabuhay) -– The cost of damage from the magnitude-7.6 earthquake that struck east of Visayas last Friday rose to P133.6 million, government data showed.

In its latest report issued Wednesday morning, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Tacloban City’s roads and bridges sustained the most damage at P62.2 million.

Northern Samar and Eastern Samar’s infrastructures, meanwhile, sustained damage worth P45 million and P12.8 million, respectively.

The cost of damage in schools in Eastern Samar has also reached P13,658,000.

The NDRRMC said at least 10 people were injured in last Friday’s quake.

The lone fatality was Emelita Ubalde, 44, a resident of Cagayan de Oro City.

As of Wednesday morning, the quake had affected 28,869 people in Surigao del Norte, Western Samar, and Eastern Samar.

Aftershocks continue to occur, the latest of which was recorded 8:35 a.m. 136 kilometers northeast of Guiuan, Eastern Samar. (MNS)
