MANILA (Mabuhay) – Senator Alan Peter Cayetano has finally come clean about his plans for 2016.
Cayetano categorically said he wants to be President of the Philippines and it’s just a matter of timing.
Cayetano said he has tapped the services of political consultant and former advertising executive Greg Garcia ahead of his presidential bid.
He claimed polls from different parts of the country show he stands a chance against other possible contenders in 2016.
“Sino bang pumasok sa pulitika, barangay captain, kagawad, counselor, mayor na ayaw sa isang araw maging presidente,” he said.
“I want to be president of this country. I think I can do something great for God and for our people…I don’t want to run. I want to win,” he added.
If he runs for president in 2016, he will be going up against Vice-President Jejomar Binay who has already his plan to run in the next presidential election.
Other rumored candidates for the presidency include Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas, Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. and Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
On Thursday, United Nationalist Alliance secretary-general Toby Tiangco accused Cayetano of using the pork barrel scam to boost his own possible bid for higher office in 2016.
He said Cayetano is conditioning the minds of people when he said that there is fear that Binay would be lenient on his allies linked to the scam if he is elected president in the next election.
Tiangco noted Cayetano used the same tactic in 2010 when he labeled the Liberal Party as the “tropang topak” or the “trapos, oportunistas, and kamag-anaks.” At that time, Cayetano was campaigning for Nacionalista Party presidential candidate Sen. Manuel Villar Jr.
“Dati nung 2010 sino ba ang nagsabing tropang topak ang LP? Ngayon kasama na siya sa tropang topak. Wag niyo nang isama si Vice President Binay sa usapan. Kung gusto mong mamulitika dahil nag announce ka na ikaw ay tatakbong presidente, you campaign for yourself. Wag mo nang isama ibang tao,” Tiangco said. (MNS)
